This Rs 100 million project was setup by Punjab Government with assistance of UNDP & UNIDO in 1984. In this centre 95 personnel are working to initiate and implement R&D in the field of Bicycle and Sewing machine for the up gradation of technology , improvement in quality and productivity. The centre is fully equipped to provide the following facilities to the Industry:

 

To design and develop new models of bicycle & Sewing Machines, Components, and accessories as per the latest trend.

 

To develop complete package of Production technology for new product.

 

To develop special purpose testing and production machine , Low cost semi automatic and automatic machine for small scale industry.

 

To develop special tooling , jigs, fixtures, and test rigs which are being used for producing quality goods for export.

 

To train manpower in small scale industry for energy conservation and pollution control.

 

To give consultancy services for improvement in processing techniques, Low cost automations, Modernization of plant, effluent treatment and quality control .

 

Establishment of this centre has been a big boon to cycle Industry specially in small scale. The institute produced many innovative machines both for production and testing for industry which obviated import of costly equipment. The institute also introduced 8 Kg light bicycle, folding bicycle, shopping bicycle in India. There are around 4000 registered and un registered units producing bicycle components in Ludhiana only.

 

Research and Development Centers for specified products such as engineering and electronic items, textiles, hosiery, leather and sports goods, chemicals, paints and varnishes and rubber goods have been setup for providing such services to relevant sector of Industry.

 

2. Institute for Auto parts Technology Ludhiana (Punjab)

 

Institute of Auto Parts , Focal Point Ludhiana and Institute of Machine tool technology focal point , Batala, District Gurdaspur which are being established with UNDP & UNIDO assistance for providing similar services to auto parts and machine tool industry in the area.

 

Among the other prestigious centers are the Indo-German Tool Room ,Focal Point Ludhiana, Punjab Test House, Punjab Trade Centre, Hosiery and Knitwear Facility Ludhiana, Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), Mechanical Engineering R&D organization and Central Food Technological Research Centre, all at Ludhiana, the Handtools Design Institute, Jalandhar, and a branch of SASMIR at Amritsar.

 

Institute for Auto parts Technology is a Punjab Government project assisted by UNDP/UNIDO. The Institute is primarily assisting small scale automotive component manufacturers to upgrade their Technology base and Quality of their products in the changing economic and technological environment. The capabilities established at the Institute are in the areas relating to Total Quality Management, Testing and Evaluation, Design, Production process, Computer Aided Engineering and R & D.

3. NIIFT (Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology)

 

The Indian Textile and Apparel Industry is undertaking a massive Technology up gradation of Textile Machinery implementing a 6 billion dollar expansion program to achieve India's export target, for Textile, of around 20 billion dollar (72 thousand crore rupees and above) by t he 2000 AD fixed by Ministry of Textile, Govt. Of India. In the context of proposed phasing out of quotas in textiles over the 10 years in the Uruguay round of talks and the advent of WTO (World Table Organization) the complete phenomenon has come to India's benefit. NIIFT (Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology) conducts its training program to assist the fast growing Textile and Apparel fashion garment Industry in India to become globally competitive. NIIFT at Mohali has now emerged as a prestigious training Institute in India, established by Punjab Govt.., in collaboration with National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT), New Delhi (Minister of Textile) for education of young men and women who has a flair and aptitude for fashion designing and an entrepreneurial acument for career and business in textiles, garments manufacturing technology with litting desire to become architects of their destiny in the world of blossoming fashion revolution.

 

NIIFT is an institute where students come form all over the country working together in order to do something different from the world market. During their term at the institute students go for craft documentation, wherein they work on dying arts and crafts of the country, working the revival and exploring what is primitive, what is traditional, their by making the country aware of the hidden treasures and gifts, and also try to combine them with the latest, thus innovating. The students also work on the projects which are directly related to the industry, the layouts, the technology development, In-house and outhouse management system's study, departmentalization, production, floor planning, quality control and many more. By the time the students finish with the course, they are well equipped with knowledge required directly of indirectly for their field, the Industrial program for 6 weeks, which is the part of curriculum is an added benefit. Then they are ready to join the industries. We are not only proud but satisfied to mentions that first batch of the GMT students has been placed 100% in the leading export houses and Industries with the pay packet ranging from Rs.7500/- to Rs.1400/- and a huge demand is still pending.

 

4. IMTT-Institute for Machine Tools Technology

 

Institute For Machine Tools Technology is a Punjab Govt. Project assisted by the UNDP/UNIDO. It is has come up on a plot area of 5.85 areas in the Industrial Focal Point of Industrial Town Batala, Distt. Gurdaspur. UNDP is contributing in the shape of imported latest plant and machinery, Foreign exports, fellowship trainings of the staff at the renowned Institutes and also the National Consultants from the specialized & renowned Institutes in India. Punjab Govt. is contributing towards the land and Building, Indigenous plant and Machinery & other expenses. The Institute will primarily assist small scale Industries to upgrade their technological base and quality of their product in changing Economic and Technological environment. The Capabilities have been and are being established in the areas relating to TQM, Testing and evaluation, Design, Prototype development, Heat Treatment, Production Processes, CAD and R & D. the following facilities have installed.
