Roads

 

The total road mileage in Punjab is 35,501 Kms of state roads and rural link roads. In addition, the length of national highways is 964 Kms. All the villages in the Ludhiana are linked by all-weather roads and major towns are connected by national highways. One can drive from one extreme end of the Ludhiana to the other in one hour. Road travel time from Ludhiana to Delhi is about five hours.

 

All sub-divisional towns have direct bus services to the state capital, Chandigarh. All villages have bus services linking them with the sub-division headquarters towns. In addition, there are excellent deluxe bus services between New Delhi and Ludhiana, Ludhiana and Chandigarh. Air conditioned luxury buses ply at almost hourly intervals between New Delhi and Ludhiana. Taxi services between various towns and Chandigarh and to New Delhi are dependable and comfortable.

 

Railways

 

All major towns and district headquarters have excellent rail links for both passenger and goods traffic. Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Ferozepur and Jalandhar are on the main line and have excellent daily train services to New Delhi including convenient overnight trains. Super fast Shatabdi Express trains connect Delhi to Chandigarh (a comfortable three-hour trip) and Delhi to Amritsar via Ludhiana (equally comfortable and just a little less than six hours). The Shan-e-Punjab train links Amritsar and New Delhi, the Himalayan Queen links Chandigarh and New Delhi and there are numerous trains from Jammu / Amritsar, linking these towns as well as Ludhiana and Jalandhar with New Delhi For more information of various trains and availability schedules, click through the Indian Railway WebSite.

 

Airport

 

The official name of Ludhiana Airport is Sahnewal Airport located near a small town of Punjab, Sahnewal. It is situated on the GT Road, 5 kilometers southeast of Ludhiana. The Ludhiana airport is located 75° 51’ 0” East Longitude 30° 54’ 0” North Latitude. The maintenance and the administration of Ludhiana airport is under the supervision of Airports Authority of India.

 

Ludhiana airport is spread over an area of 124.27 acres, at an elevation of 833.76 ft. The airport terminal has the capacity to handle arrival and departure of 20 flights. The dimension of the runway is 4800 ft by 100ft.

 

The expansion plan of Sahnewal Airport, to manage passenger flights was forwarded on 10th April 2007. The airport was previously efficient in handling 40- small seater planes. Earlier the Halwara Air Force Base was selected for expansion plan for passenger aircrafts. But was dropped due to security reasons.
